>>> enjoying the cold
iced tea." And that's what I did.
A quick look around the room, and the man looked up at me with a smile. "You got
me."
"Yeah," I answered. I took my time drinking from my cup, savoring the taste. I
looked down at my drink.
The man was already beginning to get into character, taking one last sip of his
drink. "I really enjoy your work on this ship. It's something new and different for
me." He continued on a bit more slowly. "You know, if you could stay awhile," he
said.
"Sure thing, man." I took another swig.
"If you don't mind," the man went on, "I've got some other work to do." He stood up
and took his drink in hand. "I need a bit of a break after this. But if you'll
excuse me, I really want to get out of here. I know you'd like to see what's out
there…"
"Sure thing," I said again. I walked over to the door. I opened it and stepped
outside.
The day was warm. The air was refreshing. The sun was shining down on me as I stood
in the middle of the room, looking at the stars. A woman was walking out of the
kitchen, waving a towel around and smiling.
"Hey, you!" I yelled to her. "Who're you?"
"Hi!" she replied cheerfully. "I'm just having some dinner with my friend."
"How come?"
"Well, you know, it's so early in the morning I can't sleep. I came out here just
for a bit of an adventure…" She trailed off and laughed. "But I guess I'm not
supposed to tell you." She winked at me.
I looked over at her and smiled. She was a pretty girl. And she had a smile like a
flower. And, at the moment, my heart was full of butterflies as I thought about what
could happen after this. It was such a beautiful day, the sky was so clear, and it
felt so good to be out here.
I walked over to the man standing next to me. He had his coffee down and was
drinking from a mug. "Hi." I said.
"You too," he said. He placed his cup back on the table and stood up. "Hey, you!
Want some coffee?"
"Sure thing," I replied. I took another sip of my drink. I couldn't wait to see what
would happen after this. If I'd ever get out of here.
I walked over to the counter and looked around. It was a very small place with only
two tables and a few chairs. The shop was open 24 hours, so I assumed it was an
early morning operation. There were no signs indicating that it would be a late
night spot. But, for some reason, I was still curious about what I was going to see
when I walked out of this room.
I sat down at the counter and waited for the man to return. He came back with two
cups, two mugs, and three menus. "Want anything? Anything?" he asked me.
"What can I get you?"
He took the cups and mugs from me. "Coffee, water… Oh yes, you'd like a tall glass
of milk?"
I smiled at him as I nodded. He poured my milk into a cup. I looked up at him and he
smiled back.
"Well, since you don't want any sugar or something else, that'll be $2.50." He
handed me the mugs, then walked away with his two friends. They were all men. They
had short hair and wore jeans. I felt a little uncomfortable, but I guess they
didn't seem like the type to harass anyone, so I decided to accept their offer.
"You're going to be okay," he said as he left. "I'm sure everything will go
smoothly."
"Yeah," I nodded. "If you think so."
As soon as he was gone, I took my coffee from the mug and began to stir it. A few
minutes later, I took another sip. This time, I could feel the sugar and cream
beginning to caramelize on top of the milk. It wasn't nearly as sweet as when I had
the tea, but it still tasted delicious.
I set the cup down in front of me with a slight smile. "There you go," I said.
"Great job, man," the woman sitting across from me said. She was wearing jeans and a
black blouse. "You really brought out the color."
"Thanks," I replied. She was a very attractive person. I was pretty sure she didn't
work here just happen.
